Raga Kadanakuthuhalam (கதனகுதூஹலம் ராகம்)

Though I do not understand classical carnatic technically very well, I relate to the feel of the ragas and songs at an emotional level, and it is just fine by me. I trust at least there are similar souls out there who appreciate my notion of enjoying music. I wish to share my experience of listening to raga kadanakuthuhalam, which gives a feeling of joyous abandon.

Raga kadanakuthuhalam is a janya raga derived from 29th melakartha – raga sankarabharanam. Most famous composition set in this raga is ‘Raghuvamsa sudha’ by Patnam Subramaniya Iyer. Almost all popular musicians have rendered this kriti in their own style. My favourite renderings are by K.J Yesudas and Maharajapuram Santhanam. Energy of this raga is phenomenal. Just click on the You Tube links below to enjoy the song.

Dr M Balamuralikrishna's  rendering of kadanakuthuhalam thillana brings out the energy of this cheerful raga fully.
