Onion chutney (வெங்காய சட்னி)

Spicy onion chutney goes very well with idlies and crispy dosas. Just give it a try.

Ingredients: (Serves three)
Onions – 3 no, peeled, and cut into large pieces (பெல்லாரி வெங்காயம்)
Tamarind – a small bit
Red chillies – 2 or 3, adjust to taste
Urad dhal – 1 tablespoon
Salt – to taste
Oil – 2 teaspoons
Mustard seeds – ½ teaspoon
Curry leaves – a few

Onion chutney (வெங்காய சட்னி)
Method: Fry urad dhal and red chillies with little oil in a kadai till the dhal turn golden brown. Add cut onion and fry till they become transparent. Allow it to cool. Grind tamarind, salt and fried items with required water in to a fine paste. Heat the remaining oil in a tadka pan/spice pan (தாளிக்கிற கரண்டி), add mustard seeds and once they start to sputter, switch off the fire. Add the seasoning to the ground chutney. Garnish with curry leaves. Serve with idly, dosa, adai, appam, kuzhi paniyaram or uppuma.
