Simple Tomato Chutney (எளிதான தக்காளி சட்னி)


Simple tomato chutney is an easy-to-make recipe and it goes well with hot spongy idlies. This is an emergency recipe that is useful when you do not have time or other ingredients to prepare an accompaniment to breakfast.

Ingredients: (Serves three)
Tomatoes – medium sized, 4 no
Red chilli – 1-2 no, adjust to taste
Asafoetida – a pinch
Salt – to taste
Oil – 1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds – ½ teaspoon
Curry leaves – a few

Method: Grind tomatoes, red chillies and salt into a fine paste using the mixer grinder. You need not add water while grinding. Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds and when they start to sputter add asafoetida. Now add the ground paste and bring it to boil. Reduce the fire and cook on low flame for a few minutes. Switch off the stove. At this stage, the chutney will be slightly thin. Alternatively, you may continue to cook the chutney on low flame till it becomes thick and oil separates. Garnish with curry leaves. Serve hot with idly, dosa, adai, appam, kuzhi paniyaram or uppuma.
